The Influence of Classic MGM Musicals on a Young Black Girl in Cleveland
Growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, during the 1980s, I was captivated by the glamorous world of classic musicals of the 40's and 50's. Films like "Singin' in the Rain," "An American in Paris," and just about anything with Judy Garland or Fred Astaire were not just entertainment; they were windows into a world of elegance, rhythm, and the most vivid technicolor dreams. For a young Black girl with a passion for dance and fashion, these movies were both a needed escape and a source of aspirational inspiration, even as I understood I was never a depiction of what they would showcase.
The Allure of Musicals
MGM musicals had a magical way of blending narrative with song and dance. The elaborate costumes, the graceful choreography, and the captivating scores transported me to a place where anything seemed possible. Watching Gene Kelly tap dance across the screen or Judy Garland belt out a heartfelt tune made me believe in the power of dreams, especially when they did it together - Summer Stock is also favorite of mine.
These musicals taught me about style and sophistication. I was mesmerized by the elegant wardrobe, the perfectly coiffed hair, and the seamless grace of those on the screen. Every shuffle-ball-change and every costume was a lesson in artistry and a call to my own creative spirit.
Dreams Deferred
Despite my passion for dance and fashion, life's realities stepped in and often led me down a different path. Motherhood, marriage, college, and career (in that order) were fulfilling on their own but they often left little room for my artistic aspirations. As the years passed, those dreams of dancing on stage or designing stunning outfits, I really thought I could be the next Edith Head, felt like distant memories, left discarded on the cutting room floor.
Rediscovering My Dreams at 50
Now, at 50, I've come to a poignant realization: while the dreams of my youth may have been deferred, they are far from gone. The passion for dance and fashion those movies ignited in me still burn brightly. I just needed to find a new way to bring them to life.
Breathing New Life into Old Dreams
I hope that my blog will offer the perfect platform to reconnect with those dreams. Here’s how I plan to breathe new life into them:
Fashion Features: I can explore and showcase fashion inspired by the classic styles of MGM musicals and other classic movies, The Women and Designing Woman do not disappoint.
Dance Diaries: While I may not be able to take to the stage, I can still share my love for dance and choreography, and maybe even take up dance classes to share my journey.
Musical Moments: By revisiting and reviewing classic MGM musicals, I can share the magic they hold and how they continue to inspire me. Yes, I know they were problematic but I like what I like and I am firmly ok with that part of me.
Personal Reflections: I hope that sharing my story and the journey of rekindling my dreams can inspire others to do the same. It's never too late to chase a passion, and my blog can be a testament to that.
Creative Collaborations: Partnering with local designers, dancers, and artists to create content that blends our talents and passions. This could lead to exciting projects that honor the past while celebrating the present.
The dreams of that young girl in Cleveland may have taken a backseat for a time, but they are far from forgotten. Through my blog, I have the opportunity to honor the influence of these classic movies and musicals while pursuing my passions in new and meaningful ways that also honor me. It's a reminder that no matter our age, it's never too late to dance, to design, to dream and Get Happy.
This is a wonderful testimony, showing and sharing that a dream can be reached no matter how much time has passed. I am so excited to be a part of your journey! The dream is as very but as elegant as you are. Cheers to you! Let’s get happy 💗
